First Lady Caroline Harrison’s “Pigs in a Blanket Recipe” is all the buzz in the Washington, D.C. scene this spring!  Both the March of Dimes and the DAR feature the tasty dish, which was one of Benjamin Harrison’s favorites.

Grand Opening of Harrison Hall at Camp Atterbury
Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger, the adjutant general of the Indiana National Guard, announced the opening of the Harrison Hall, located in the Indiana Regional Training Institute on Camp Atterbury Joint Maneuver Training Center, with a red-ribbon cutting Jan. 9, 2011.

 

Benjamin Harrison Day 2011
Students were invited to participate in the celebration of Benjamin Harrison Day at the Indiana State House on March 11, 2011. The recreation of the 1871 Ex Parte Milligan case was held in the Indiana Supreme Court Courtroom. Watch the mock trials that took place at this event!.

Harrison Majestic Oak Tree
Vine & Branch, Inc. is at it again!  In January, their able arborists led by Vine & Branch founder and president Judson Scott, graciously and dutifully trimmed and secured the Harrison Oak tree so it can continue to welcome guests to the beautiful Harrison site.  We are so proud that they have adopted our glorious oak and continue to preserve it for years to come!  As it turns out, the Vine & Branch headquarters is located in an 1874 home with a rich history, and a fun mention of William Henry Harrison!

 

Advancing American Democracy Award
As part of the Mary Tucker Jasper Speaker Series dinner program, the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site presented its first annual Advancing American Democracy Award to The Honorable Senator Richard G. Lugar.  The Award recognizes an individual who advances the values of American democracy by encouraging and enabling ethical citizen participation in government. 

Lugar has served six terms as U.S. Senator as an unwavering advocate of U.S. leadership in the world, strong national security, free trade and economic growth. Lugar is the Republican leader of the Foreign Relations Committee and a member and former chairman of the Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee.  More.

 

The Victorian Society in America has voted to honor the President Benjamin Harrison Home with a commendation for completion of a series of restoration projects to enhance and preserve this 1875 National Historic Landmark.  The Society’s Preservation Committee was impressed by the meticulous care and professionalism of the restoration work, including: the reconstruction of the carriage house, the improvement of visitor amenities—including handicapped accessibility, landscaping of the grounds, and restoration of interior decorations.  We are all very proud and excited to receive this commendation from an organization that sets the standards!  Our sincere appreciation to Tiffany Benedict Berkson, Vanessa Burkhart, and Marsh Davis for their supportive words and admirable advocacy!  Visit VSA awards to learn more and follow details about the formal presentation (coming in May 2010) of this award.
