A TRIP TO THE HARRISON HOME
Students experience history first hand when they visit Indiana’s only Presidential Home.
Programs designed to enrich curriculum are available for all elementary grades.
To schedule a visit, call (317)631-2717 weekdays between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Teachers, bus drivers and one adult chaperone per 15 students are admitted free. Each additional adult chaperone pays $4.50. Payments should be received 14 days prior to visit. Checks are made payable to the "President Benjamin Harrison Home."

TOUR OF THE PRESIDENT'S HOME ALL AGES
Docents guide students through the elegant home of Indiana’s only U.S. President. The dining room displays Presidential china and Harrison’s study is filled with personal belongings from his White House years. The majority of the house furnishings are original to the Harrison family, which gives an accurate view of the Victorian era.

LIVE FROM DELAWARE STREET ALL AGES
The past comes alive with accurate portrayals of Harrison and his household staff. As visitors tour the three-story Italianate Victorian home, they meet old friends of the Harrison family. Among others, Josie, the seamstress; Delia, the cook; Charles, the butler; and Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd President of the United States, are all portrayed by enactors. This special program is scheduled four times a year by appointment.

Children see President Harrison’s Victorian home through the eyes of a make-believe visitor, Minerva Mouse.

A WALKING TOUR OF DELAWARE STREET GRADES 5 AND 6
Students discover turn-of-the-century homes, architectural styles and stories about President Harrison’s neighbors while walking beautiful Delaware Street. A review of architectural styles in the Harrison Home completes this popular program, which is offered from August through October, and April through May.

Programs are designed by the Education Staff of the Harrison Home to enrich the elementary
curriculum. Each program brings a part of the Harrison history alive for the students and
and includes a first floor tour of the Presidential Home.

WOODEN SOLDIERS GRADES 1 AND 2
Since Benjamin Harrison was the first President to decorate a Christmas tree in the White House, it is fitting that students see the home’s Victorian holiday decorations. Each student makes a wooden soldier ornament. This program is offered only during December.

NATIVE AMERICANS OF INDIANA GRADES 2 AND 3
Benjamin Harrison’s grandfather, William Henry Harrison, the first Governor of the Indiana Territory, made treaties with the Shawnee Indians. Students discuss Shawnee culture, learn their alphabet and make headbands to take home.

Students use their senses to identify sounds, smells and artifacts of the Victorian period. The program is fun and educational while testing students’ deductive reasoning skills. This program can be designed to appeal to any grade level, 1 through 5..

SETTLERS AND SURVEYORS GRADES 3 AND 4
William Henry Harrison, grandfather of President Benjamin Harrison, was the first Governor of the Indiana Territory during its early settlement. Students learn how the pioneer settlers chose properties for businesses, schools and homes. The role playing aspect of this program makes it popular among students and teachers.

COMING TO AMERICA GRADES 3 THROUGH 5
(a special offering for the 2005 Ellis Island exhibit)

Ellis Island (1892-1954) was opened during the presidency of Benjamin Harrison. Over 12 million immigrants came through it, changing and enriching the American experience forever. Students learn and experience the fate of the immigrants, from their ship voyage to their actual processing at Ellis Island.

BUSTLES TO BALLOTS GRADES 4 AND 5
A time existed when a woman could not vote or own property. Her salary was paid directly to the "man" of the household. Activities, discussions and a new permanent exhibit will teach students about the long struggle for women’s suffrage.

THE SIGNING GRADE 5
Benjamin Harrison V, great-grandfather of President Harrison, was one of the signers of The Declaration of Independence. Students take a leap backward to 1776, become colonists, and sign The Declaration of Independence with quill pens, which they take home as reminders of their visit to the Presidential Home.

THE CIVIL WAR GRADE 5
As commander of Indiana’s 70th Volunteer Regiment during the Civil War, Benjamin Harrison was cited for leadership and bravery. Students sign enlistment papers, select regiment leaders and make decisions about war strategies that bring the historically accurate program to life.

Students will experience a "typical" day for the person who holds the highest office in the land and learn about the traditions of the presidency.

Should we call the United States government a Democracy? Students will learn how our system of government came to be, and exactly what form of government we have. Activities will involve students in active citizenship.

1. Hail To the Chief
Students learn the six jobs that every U.S. President must fulfill. The history of the song "Hail To the Chief" is explored and a short video journey through the parlors of the Harrison Home follows. Finally, Benjamin Harrison enactor Ed Myers speaks to the participants and answers questions in the first person.
2. "Is the United States a Democracy?"
Should we call the United States government a Democracy? Students learn how our system of government came to be, and exactly what form it has taken. Activities include all the students in active citizenship.
3. The Civil War
Students review Harrison's wartime letters and the diary of of Confederate soldier John Weatherred. The causes and realities of the war analyzed. Students break into Union and Confederate teams to answer questions.
