The collection of Caroline Scott Harrison’s watercolors at the President Benjamin Harrison Home is the largest single holding of her work. (Other examples of her work may be found in the White House Collection and the NS DAR Museum.) Although many of the watercolors are from nature, the subjects vary yet all display her talent. Included in the collection are several of her orchid studies, so beloved by DAR members and her studies of corn as a border design for the Harrison White House china.
The Caroline Scott Harrison Chapter (IN) has a close relationship with the President Benjamin Harrison Home and a number of chapter members serve as docents. When the PBHH Curator proposed this project as a possibility for the DAR historic preservation project, the chapter readily agreed. The photography project offered the chapter a rare opportunity to participate in preservation and education efforts related to the life and work of the wife of the twenty-third president and the first President-General, NS DAR.
The Caroline Scott Harrison Chapter photographed 50 watercolors by Caroline Scott Harrison from the President Benjamin Harrison Home Collection and worked with Harrison Home staff to post the images on the PBHH website.
